The mausoleum of the Montenegrin ruler, philosopher and poet, Petar II Petrović Njegoš is located on the top of the mountain in Lovćen National Park. Njegoš’s last wish was to be interred at the Jezerski Peak. The people respected the wish of their ruler and built him a chapel while he was still alive. Later, in 1974, the chapel was replaced by the mausoleum, designed by the famous Croatian sculptor, Ivan Meštrović. A narrow asphalt road leads to the foot of the mausoleum, which can then be reached by climbing 461 steps. The mausoleum has two stone caryatides: mother and daughter, as well as a figure of Njegoš, whereas the crypt holds Njegoš’s grave. The Njegoš Mausoleum is 37 meters long, 15.4 meters wide and nearly 11 meters tall. The granite statue of Njegoš weighs 28 tons. Around 11,000 tons of stone were carried to the top of Lovćen, which is 1654 meters tall. Some of the stone blocks weigh more than 40 tons. The beautiful view of the Bay of Kotor, Lake Skadar, tall mountains in the North of Montenegro and a part of Albania is a sight to behold.
In the evening, return to the hotel and have free time to walk around the city.
